I knew you were carrying more than anyone could see. Stress sat heavily on your shoulders, and every day seemed to ask more from you than you had left to give. I saw the exhaustion in your eyes, the way your smile faded a little more each day, and I understood that life was hurting you long before our conversation ever happened. That is why when your anger came crashing down on me, I tried not to take it personally.
But understanding someone’s pain does not make their words hurt any less. I stood there while the frustration you had been holding inside found its way toward me. I knew I had done nothing wrong, yet I became the place where all your disappointment, fear, and pressure landed. In that moment, I stopped being someone who cared about you and became a target for emotions that were never mine to carry.
What hurt the most was not the anger itself. It was realizing that the person I wanted to comfort was the same person causing the wound. I wanted to ask how you were really doing, to sit with all the things that were weighing you down, to give you a chance to let it all out. But I could see how overwhelmed you were, and the words never seemed to come. When I said you are a bit off today this is what I meant, Instead, I talked about random things, anything I thought might distract you for a while or make you smile. It was my quiet way of trying to carry some of the heaviness with you. Yet somehow, those small attempts at care were met with anger, and I was left wondering why kindness had become something painful between us.
People often think that if someone lashes out because they are stressed, the damage disappears once the stress is gone. It does not. The pressure you were under may be temporary, but the memories of that moment stay. Long after your anger fades , I was left replaying the conversation, wondering which part of me deserved to be spoken to that way. Deep down, I knew the answer was none of it, but hurt has a way of making us question ourselves anyway.
I do not hate you for what happened. In fact, my heart aches for everything you are going through. I know that people can break when life becomes too heavy, and sometimes they push away the very people who care about them most. Understanding your pain does not heal mine. I hold empathy for your struggles while still grieving because of the pain and damage between us.
That is the tragedy of a broken heart and broken dreams. One heart breaks under the weight of stress and suffering, while another breaks from being caught in the storm. The dream was never to fix your problems or take your pain away. It was simply to be there for you, to make you laugh for a moment, to make a difficult day feel a little lighter. When that was met with a wall and anger instead, something inside me broke too. I understand why you lashed out. I understand the pressure, the fear, and the exhaustion. But even with all that understanding, I am still standing here, holding the pieces of words I never deserved, trying to heal from a wound you never meant to create.
